To kick off the Grand Opening of MD|TV, we’re sporting a community challenge! What’s a community challenge you ask? Well, it’s getting the community as a whole to work together on a single goal. Maybe it’s to figure out a tricky strategy, or maybe it’s to get some footage from everyone and their vast pool of experience. Either way, it’ll be sure to result in some cool discussion.

So, this challenge is focused on Shock Cannon abusing! Every once in a while you’ll get hit with a Shock Cannon and just FLY! Or even more spectacular, you’ll see someone get hit with a Shock blast that launches them straight up in the air and then destroyed by someone else’s guns in mid-air 50 feet above everyone else. Epic tank fireworks!

The challenge is to get as much SICK footage of Shock Cannon abuse as possible. The more intense, the better. I want to see tanks flying, aight? Here’s some stuff I grabbed from a single runthrough. Some of it’s alright… but it could be so much cooler.

So post your youtube links below, and we’ll see what you guys can get. I’m looking forward to editing the best ones into a sweet montage of pure Shock Abuse.

To record footage, I recommend one of three programs:
PlayClaw - My personal favorite because it has a pre-record feature so that you can hit a button after something cool has happened, and record only the good parts. Has a free trial of unlimited record time, but plaster the obnoxious moving water mark on your screen.

FRAPS - The original standard. Has a free trial with limited recording time and a fairly unobtrusive watermark.

Bandicam - I haven’t used this one personally, but it’s getting some really good reviews. Also has a decent free trial.

It’s pretty cool to watch both at the same time, getting mirror images of each other. Both Dcooney and Firestar are stinkin’ formidable, and quite a few cool tactics can be gleaned from their separate play styles. Anyway, wanted to share some notable moments in this match.

In the first video (Dcooney’s perspective) check out these times:

*Through the wall kill: 1:57
*Inches-close save: 2:50
*Sick Goal Assist: 3:45
*Hyperspace clean up: 8:00

Not only has he been playing Metal Drift since 2008 - while it was still in beta - but he continues to hone his skills often. His suggestions have helped shape Metal Drift into what it is today.

What a glorious thing to behold! Metal Drift TV is born!

Metal Drift is a fantastic game, it really just is. However, just because our resident developers are tremendous game designers and executers doesn’t mean that it’s been an easy ride. A two man team of serious epic just was not able to wear every single hat at once, and therefore marketing fell to the wayside in favor of other similarly important tasks.

But this tale of woe has a happy ending… or more accurately it has a fortuitous turn of events. You see, since it’s release, Metal Drift has picked up some pretty die hard fans. Fans that are willing to wear some of those hats that the developers just don’t have the time to wear.

And so we the fans bring you Metal Drift TV! A fan operated, but officially sanctioned site where all your Metal Drift organizing, reminiscing, strategizing, challenging, and straight up BSing can take place. Take a look around, and keep that wicked cocktail of adrenaline pumping tonight!

Arena #5 Broadsword is a long, multi-level map with a large kill zone and battle zones galore. There are many places to take the ball. Tank spawns are near the goal, split to groups of 3. The ball spawn is far and away from the goals. Each goal rests in an L-shaped wall with team shields built in. A sunken area between the two goals quickly becomes a slaughterhouse when the ball ends up down there. Explore and become familiar with this map to excel here.

Strategies

If you have a proven strategy you really enjoy using, leave a comment below!

Using Team Fake, a swift goal is possible when coming from the direction of the ball spawn. Grab the ball, weave through the cover you can find and race directly through the enemy’s team shield for a swift goal.

With your favorite weapon and armor, a very good defense can be made by camping near your goal. Stick to the team shields to duck for cover when under attack, and emerge to fire at the ball runner or marauding tanks. Most tanks must make a few treacherously tight corners to score, so anticipate their arrival around these corners and blast them away. Pick up the ball and throw it into the pit of death to allow your team a chance to recuperate.

The beginning of every game takes a “LEEEROOOYY JEENKIIIINS” feel as opposing teams rush to the center for the ball. The goals, however, are upstairs. They rest near eachother on overpasses. A successful stop of an enemy runner near the goals can turn around to a goal for your own team in a matter of seconds. The distance from tank spawns to goal is very long. Hyperspace or Armor can save a game.

Strategies

With the Plasma Launcher and Armor upgrades, camp the goals with emphasis on defense. A few choice powered shots and regular shots will destroy a runner. Pounce on the ball. The distance to the enemy goal makes Armor a viable upgrade to score with, so go for it.

Equip speed and a high damage weapon. With the ball on the outskirts of the map, boost and make for the enemy goal. You will likely find an enemy along the way, so shoot the enemy with your weapon for a large addition to your power bar. Cyclone is a very fast map, so keep your power bar full to take advantage of this strategy at all times.

Arena #3 Diamondback presents many challenges. The goals sit high above the main level and are only accessible by driving directly past the tank spawn points. Speed tunnels along the long walls help to score, but their outlets are also right next to tank spawns. Coordination and generally a full bar of boost are needed to score. The placement of repair pads allow a strong defense when not using the boost tunnels.

Strategies

If you have a proven strategy you really enjoy using, leave a comment below!

Take the ball to your home goal and throw it across the gap to the enemy’s goal. Someone on your team must then activate Hyperspace. By playing the odds of where they appear, it is possible to throw the ball and quickly score due to the proximity of the two goals.

Equip speed and your favorite weapon with knockback. Score hits on enemy tanks to build a full power bar while playing defense near your tank spawns. When given the chance to grab the ball, take it back towards home and use the boost tunnel to quickly travel down field. Dribble if possible. Just before exiting the boost tunnel, start using boost to get a massive jump in speed. Swing wide around the enemy shield and boost up the ramp to score a goal.

Arena #2 Master is a narrow map with boost tunnels along the wall. The ball drops dead center, and each team’s repair pad sits near the ball spawn protected by a solid wall. There’s a lot of cover, with tight spaces, so shock cannon stalking is very useful here. Tank spawns are split 3 and 3 in the corners near respective goals.

Strategies

If you have a proven strategy you really enjoy using, leave a comment!

A rush tactic can be successful with either Hyperspace or Speed upgrades. There is plenty of cover along the way, and beginning of the game tank spawns are split, so you won’t run into a full brigade of the enemy. Rush the ball and choose left or right up the ramps. Continue forward to keep momentum and take the sharp left or right as necessary. Save your boost for the final push to the goal to make yourself a more difficult target.

Use the boost tunnels to travel quickly down the side of the map. The boost tunnels outlet very near tank spawn points, so beware of fresh tanks waiting. From the outlet to enemy goal there is a very broad curve to take to keep speed up. Save your boost for the final push. Dribbling down the boost tunnel is a very good idea, and a dribble can be completed before the enemy goal.
